A Bumblebee for Bumblebee

A Bumblebee for Bumblebee

What better way to start the blog for Bumblebee Crafts than with a handmade bumblebee? Here’s a stained glass sun-catcher made from a combination of clear and opalescent glass. I also used ‘hammered’ black glass which gives a nice texture.

The pieces were cut, ground and foiled before soldering and the whole piece was framed and strengthened with lightweight lead came. This was one of the first pieces made using my Glastar glass grinder which made the work of matching the curves much easier. The piece looked OK without the came, but adding it gave it more of the chunkiness that’s characteristic of bumblebees.

The completed bee now hangs in the boat window although with the lead came framing it is probably robust enough to go outside as a decoration. Perhaps the roof of the boat can be decorated with bees and other animals …
